Sohail Inayatullah is an internationally recognized futurist, political scientist, and one of the leading thinkers in the field of futures studies. He holds the UNESCO Chair in Futures Studies at the Sejahtera Centre for Sustainability and Humanity at the International Islamic University Malaysia. He is also a professor at Tamkang University in Taiwan, an associate at Melbourne Business School, and co-founder of Metafuture, an international platform dedicated to futures thinking and transformative change.
Over several decades, Sohail has developed innovative approaches to understanding and shaping the future. He is best known for creating Causal Layered Analysis (CLA), a methodology that explores social issues at four levels: visible events and trends, underlying systems, worldviews, and the deeper myths and metaphors that shape our collective understanding of reality.
His central insight is that creating a different future requires us to question the assumptions and stories through which we interpret the present. His work brings together political science, macrohistory, philosophy, and transformative foresight, helping governments, organizations, communities, and individuals move beyond conventional predictions toward imagining and creating preferred futures.
Sohail has authored more than 400 academic articles, book chapters, and essays and serves as Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Futures Studies. His books include CLA 3.0: 30 Years of Transformative Research, Infectious Futures, and Asia 2038: Ten Disruptions That Change Everything.
Through his teaching, writing, and international consulting, he continues to explore how changing our deepest narratives and assumptions can open possibilities for profound personal and collective transformation.
