Lenaa Kumar is an Indian actress, author, screenwriter and trained clinical psychologist whose career spans more than 25 years and over 100 films, mostly in Malayalam cinema, with further work in Tamil, Telugu and Hindi.
Born in Kochi in 1981 and raised partly in Shillong and Thrissur, she graduated first in her class with a B.Sc. from Calicut University and then completed a postgraduate degree in clinical psychology in Mumbai, where she also worked as a clinical intern. She made her film debut in 1998 with Jayaraj’s Sneham, followed by the acclaimed Karunam, and became a leading actress in Malayalam television before turning fully to cinema.
Her role in Traffic (2011) marked a turning point and earned her the Filmfare and SIIMA awards for Best Supporting Actress. Since then she has built a body of work known for range and psychological precision, in films such as Spirit, Left Right Left, Kanyaka Talkies, Ennu Ninte Moideen, Bheeshma Parvam and Airlift. Her honours include the Kerala State Film Award, multiple Filmfare, SIIMA and Kerala Film Critics awards, and the Kerala State Television Award for Best Actress. In 2023 she wrote the story, screenplay and dialogue for Olam, in which she also acted.
Alongside her film work, Lenaa has followed a sustained inner inquiry since 2004, centred on meditation and self-investigation. In 2023 she published The Autobiography of God, which traces an eighteen-year journey through anxiety, depression and the limits of conventional psychiatric treatment. She had promised herself that if she could stay off psychiatric medication for two years, she would write a book for others facing the same struggle. The result distils her experience into five questions and a direct approach to self-realisation, addressed to readers she describes as rational, practical and non-conformist.
Her perspective brings together clinical training, lived experience of mental illness and long contemplative practice, which makes her a rare voice on the relationship between psychology, consciousness and personal freedom. She lives in Kerala with her husband, Group Captain Prasanth Balakrishnan Nair, one of the astronauts designated for India’s Gaganyaan mission.
