About this conversation

Jeffrey Kripal joins the conversation as a historian of religions and self-described optimist, arguing that imagining a better future is itself a condition for building one. He traces the third attractor back to the tertium quid, a nineteenth century term for a path beyond scientific materialism and traditional religious belief, and argues that most civilizational change starts small, around a handful of people who imagine something different before it spreads.

The conversation moves into the gap between spiritual insight and social reality. Jeffrey pushes back on the assumption that recognizing non-duality or oneness naturally produces more inclusive societies, pointing out that cultures built around unity have historically still excluded people at scale. He locates the deeper obstacle in a very old human tendency toward boundaries and exclusion, one that has coexisted with migration and openness throughout history rather than being resolved by either.

The second half turns to what Jeffrey calls impossible experiences, moments that fall outside a scientific framework rather than being supernatural in any fear based sense. He argues these experiences, from psychedelic states to UFO encounters, function as doorways that force people to reconsider consciousness as primary rather than an output of the brain, and that this reframing, which he calls the flip, changes everything downstream without requiring anyone to abandon science or medicine. He treats UFOs and psychedelics as connected phenomena, not because their nature is understood, but because both consistently produce experiences people describe as the most significant of their lives.
